South Korea, one day at a time.
Which border run actually reaches the tunnel. What an hour in hanbok costs at the palace gate. Whether Jeju is worth the flight. Every tour in South Korea, reviewed one at a time.
The days a Korean trip gets built around.
The border, the five palaces, a volcanic island off the south coast, the tree avenues an hour from Seoul, and the market that only really wakes up after dark.
Seoul repays the traveller who booked ahead.
Five palaces inside one ring road, a street-food market that fills when the offices empty, and hanok lanes that go quiet ten metres off the main road. The capital’s best hours are reserved, not stumbled into.
The DMZ: which run actually crosses the line.

Plenty of border tours stop at Imjingak, photograph the bridge and turn around. The ones below carry you past the Civilian Control Line to the Third Infiltration Tunnel and the observatory over the fields. Take your passport; it is checked at the gate.

Third Tunnel, observatory, back by evening
A coach out of central Seoul, the tunnel on foot at a slope steeper than it looks, and the observatory where the North sits a few kilometres across the fields.
The tours travellers in Korea book most.
Every Korea review →These fill first — the border runs out of Seoul, a palace morning, one long day around the east of Jeju.

What a day out in Korea actually costs.
Every tour on the site, grouped by price. A good share of the best hours in Korea cost less than dinner in Seoul.
Hanbok by the hour, market walks, show tickets and the palace circuit — the everyday best of the country.
The standard day out: border runs, the Nami Island loop, cooking classes that start with the market shop.
Jeju is a volcano with a coastline wrapped around it.
Sunrise Peak rises straight out of the sea, lava tubes run under the fields, and haenyeo divers still work the rocks without tanks. One island, and more day tours than most provinces on the mainland.
In Busan the day starts at the fish market.
Korea’s second city stacks its houses up the hillsides and its seafood on ice at Jagalchi. Ride the coastal train east, climb the painted lanes of Gamcheon, and finish at the temple built on the rocks above the water.

Temples and street food run the length of Asia. Pedal carts on a decommissioned railway, a palace fee waived for anyone in hanbok, and a river island planted in avenues belong to this country alone.

The Gapyeong Railbike
When the Gyeongchun line was straightened, the old track through the river valley was left in place and fitted with four-seat pedal carts. You freewheel through lit tunnels and out along the water an hour north-east of Seoul, and a shuttle train carries you back to the start. Weekend departures go first.

An Hour in Hanbok
Seoul makes the offer explicit: arrive at Gyeongbokgung or Changdeokgung in hanbok and the entrance fee is waived. Rental shops ring the palace walls, dressing takes about twenty minutes with help, and most rent by the hour so the rest of the day stays open.

Nami Island
A crescent of river island an hour upstream from Seoul, planted with avenues of ginkgo, pine and metasequoia that turn gold through late October. A drama filmed here in 2002 made it famous across Asia. The ferry runs every few minutes, and a zipline crosses the water for anyone in a hurry.

Book these before you fly to Korea.
Most of Korea can be arranged from the hotel the night before. These four cannot: they run on military permission, a bloom that lasts ten days, a snow season of ten weeks, and one small theatre.
- 01Best DMZ Tour Korea from Seoul (Red Suspension Bridge Optional)The zone runs on military permission. Operators submit passport details in advance, and the whole area closes to visitors on Mondays and public holidays.
- 02Jeju East: Cherry Blossom Early Bird Tour with Hotel PickupThe blossom moves north from Busan through early April and holds for about ten days. Every seat is sold against those dates.
- 03Eobi Ice Valley / Elysian Ski Resort / Nami IslandThe resorts run on made snow from December into February. Outside that window these days do not operate at all.
- 04Myeongdong Nanta Theater Show TicketOne theatre in Myeongdong, fixed showtimes, and seats released per performance — the good ones are simply the ones booked first.
Seoul does not close when the offices empty.

When jangma arrives, Korea moves indoors.
Jangma, the summer rain front, parks over the peninsula for weeks in July, and the tail of a typhoon can follow it in August. Every good answer is under a roof: a burner and a chopping board, a covered market arcade, a workshop bench, a theatre seat. None of them cancel.
